TOPIK and your Korean learning roadmap

Korean is not required to win GKS, but it is the cheapest way to add evaluation points, skip a year of language training and earn a monthly TOPIK reward once you are in Korea.

Is TOPIK mandatory?

For most GKS applications TOPIK is not a mandatory entry requirement — you can apply with zero Korean. However, it materially improves your profile, some Korean-taught departments set a minimum level, and applicants holding TOPIK Level 5 or above may be exempted from the one-year language training and placed directly into their degree.

Department-level language minimums are set in the University Information file, not the main guideline. Check both.
